Sandbox Innovation League is a season-based innovation tournament powered by Stripe Community and operated through Sandbox Africa. Founders, builders, students, creatives, professionals and emerging companies compete across recurring matchweeks, corporate challenges, city experiences and live demonstrations. Teams earn league points by proving customer understanding, product progress, execution ability, responsible innovation and commercial potential. The strongest teams progress to the playoffs and Sandbox Innovation League Championship, while participants across the league gain access to learning, corporate partners, pilot opportunities, specialist support and the wider Johannesburg innovation ecosystem.

Sandbox Innovation League is a citywide innovation season designed to reignite Johannesburg’s culture of invention, experimentation and ambitious company building. Powered by Stripe Community and operated through Sandbox Africa, the league transforms innovation from a once-off pitch competition into a long-running tournament. Participating teams compete across recurring matchweeks, structured challenges, corporate partner experiences, customer validation exercises, live product demonstrations and city-focused innovation assignments. Each fixture tests a different part of the innovation journey. Teams may be challenged to understand a customer problem, design an experience, build a working prototype, validate demand, demonstrate a business model, address security and operational risks, integrate with a partner environment or prepare for a commercial pilot. Teams receive scores for the quality of their evidence and execution. Match results are converted into league points, producing public conference standings, team form records, match histories and an overall championship race. Teams therefore have repeated opportunities to improve, recover from weaker performances and demonstrate measurable progress throughout the season. The league will bring together founders, developers, designers, researchers, students, corporate innovators, industry specialists, investors and community problem-solvers. Selected fixtures and experiences will be delivered with corporate, academic, public-sector and ecosystem partners across Johannesburg. The regular season will be followed by playoffs and a live championship event. In addition to the overall championship, teams may qualify for corporate pilots, procurement conversations, investment introductions, venture-building support, specialist awards and post-season programmes. Sandbox Innovation League is intended to become an annual city institution that makes innovation visible, competitive, collaborative and commercially meaningful.

Eligibility

Sandbox Innovation League is open to founders, aspiring founders, developers, designers, researchers, students, professionals, creatives, corporate innovators and multidisciplinary teams who want to build or advance an innovative product, service, platform or venture. Applicants may enter as individuals, informal teams, registered companies, student teams or early-stage ventures. Applicants must: Be at least 18 years old at the time of application. Be based in Johannesburg, operate in Johannesburg, study in Johannesburg or demonstrate a meaningful intention to build, test, pilot or establish their solution in Johannesburg. Be available to participate in the league schedule, including required matchweeks, checkpoints and major live events. Enter a technology-enabled, internet-enabled or innovation-led solution with credible commercial, institutional, community or city impact potential. Be willing to conduct customer research, produce evidence, develop or improve a prototype and respond to judge and partner feedback. Disclose any existing intellectual-property, employment, institutional or contractual restrictions that may affect participation. Comply with the league’s conduct, integrity, confidentiality and responsible-innovation requirements. Applications may be submitted at idea, prototype, pre-revenue, early-revenue or early-growth stage. An applicant does not need to have a registered company or completed product to enter. Employees of corporate partners may participate where their employer permits it, but conflicts of interest must be declared and managed. The organisers may consider applicants from outside Johannesburg where their participation creates a clear benefit for the city and they can meet the league’s attendance and delivery requirements.

Competition rules

Sandbox Innovation League is a season-based competition consisting of application screening, team formation, pre-season activities, regular-season fixtures, partner experiences, playoffs and a championship final. Teams must complete the deliverables assigned to each fixture by the published deadline. Late submissions may receive a scoring penalty unless an extension has been formally approved. Teams earn league points from formal fixture results: Win: 3 league points Draw: 1 league point Loss: 0 league points Judges will also produce an innovation performance score based on customer evidence, product quality, differentiation, execution, commercial potential, team effectiveness, responsible innovation and scalability. League standings will be determined by total league points. Published tie-break rules may include head-to-head results, innovation score difference, total verified evidence and independent review. All claims, customer numbers, revenue figures, product demonstrations, research findings and other evidence must be truthful and capable of verification. Fabricated traction, copied work, manipulated evidence, plagiarism, undisclosed conflicts or misrepresentation may result in a score reduction, points deduction, match forfeiture or disqualification. Teams retain ownership of their pre-existing and independently developed intellectual property. Participation does not automatically transfer intellectual property to Stripe Community, Sandbox Africa, judges, sponsors or challenge partners. Separate written agreements will be required for any corporate pilot, investment, licence, procurement engagement, data-sharing arrangement or transfer of intellectual property. Teams must respect confidential partner, customer and participant information. Information identified as confidential may not be published, presented or used outside the authorised challenge activity. Judges and partners must declare conflicts of interest. The organisers may reassign judges, exclude conflicted scores or appoint an independent reviewer. Public voting may be used for audience awards or as a limited component of selected fixtures. Public voting will not replace independent judging. Teams must treat other participants, organisers, judges, partners, venue staff and members of the public professionally and respectfully. Harassment, discrimination, intimidation, deliberate disruption, unsafe conduct or misuse of partner systems may result in immediate removal. Teams may not access systems, data, facilities or customer information beyond the access expressly authorised by the relevant partner. Team roster changes must be approved by the organisers. A team may not change its identity or transfer its league position without permission. The organisers may reschedule fixtures, replace judges, modify a challenge or adjust operational arrangements where necessary to protect fairness, safety or programme continuity. Teams may request a review of an administrative or scoring error within the published appeal period. Disagreement with a judge’s professional opinion alone is not grounds for an appeal. Failure to attend compulsory activities or repeated fixture forfeitures may result in points deductions, loss of eligibility for prizes or removal from the league. The organisers’ final governance decision will apply after the completion of any approved review process.
